Commemorazione Eccidio di Montemaggio

Every year at the end of March in Val d’Elsa a series of initiatives are organized in commemoration of one of the most salient episodes of the Resistance in this land. In ’44 two different partisan detachments met in Montemaggio to carry out sabotage on the Cassia and on the Siena-Florence tracks. On March 27, the partisans hosted by the peasant families of “Casa Giubbileo” captured two officers, one from the fascist militia and the other from the German one. The intent was to exchange them with five political prisoners. The next day the militiamen surrounded “Casa Giubileo” with heavy weapons and except for three partisans who managed to escape, all the others were captured. The 19 survivors of the encirclement were led not far away and shot instantly, only one of them managed to escape. The story of the partisans of Montemaggio, however, instead of discouraging the Resistance had the opposite effect on the young anti-fascists of the time, encouraging so many others to join the partisans. In memory of that sad but significant event, every year Colle Val d’Elsa a commemorative event is held organized by the ANPI section with meetings, testimonies, book presentations, concerts that have as their common denominator the actualization of the Resistance and Memory .
